Shahz Ahmed practices as an NHS Consultant Rhinologist and Skull Base Surgeon at University Hospitals Birmingham, University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire, and Birmingham Children’s Hospital, UK. He undertook fellowship training in South Africa and Nottingham before settling as a substantive consultant in 2010. He specialises in all aspects of Rhinology that include external and endoscopic approaches to the skull base, as well as trans-orbital approaches. He is lead pituitary surgeon in both his adult and paediatric practice and runs a competitive clinical fellowship programme for senior surgical trainees. Mr Ahmed has set up specialised clinics in Chronic Facial Pain, Allergy (in which he has patients having nasal aspirin desensitisation), Vasculitis, and for patients with Hereditary Haemorrhagic Telangiectasia. Mr Ahmed is passionate about evidence based practice and, after successfully defending his PhD on Nasal Polyposis in 2013, has supervised numerous higher degrees. He publishes widely in the medical literature and has contributed to numerous book chapters on all aspects of Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery. He is a key opinion leader, sitting on consensus panels nationally and internationally. Mr Ahmed enjoys teaching and runs cadaveric sinus surgery courses in Birmingham. He regularly gives up his personal time to lecture at national and international conferences around the world. Mr Ahmed is an active trustee for the Get Ahead Cancer Charity, supporting patients with head and neck cancer with equipment, research funding, and education. He continues to hold leadership positions in medical societies, as well as undertaking senior NHS management roles. Since October 2023, Mr Ahmed has been appointed as Medical Director for Tertiary Services at University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust.
